Phil Ivey ready to sell marijuana in Vegas

Phil Ivey could soon be selling marijuana in Las Vegas.

Phil Ivey, one of the world's finest poker players, could be about to establish himself as a champion marijuana cultivator according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Although the headline isn't one you'd normally expect to read about the great Phil Ivey, all the signs seem to be that a blossoming career in the medical marijuana industry is on the horizon for the WSOP champion and high stakes gambler.

Following Nevada's decision to legalise the growth and distribution of medical marijuana, City Council members in Las Vegas moved to approve 26 dispensaries, including one being fronted by Ivey, last week.

In a report by the Las Vegas Review Journal, 50 businesses were in the running for a preliminary licence, but following a 16-hour meeting that spanned two days, that number was reduced to just 26. As yet the poker pro hasn't made any public announcements regarding his new business venture, but if his application is ultimately successful he could find himself with a whole new way to make some green.

However, before Ivey's weed empire is given the green light, he will have to cross a few more regulatory bridges until he finds his pot of gold. At present the number of approvals granted by Vegas City Council is double the amount allocated by the state of Nevada. This means that many of those who've been given first-round approval are likely to be eliminated from the running as the application process moves forward.

Although a timeline for the final approval of licences is yet to be determined, the city's regulators have stated that the likely deadline will occur in early 2015.

Joining Ivey on the list of notable figures given a favourable nod by Vegas councillors was: restaurateur Michael Morton, downtown entrepreneur Michael Cornthwaite, developer James Hammer, former Assemblyman Mark James and political consultant David Thomas.
