Is High Stakes Poker set to make a comeback?

Will High Stakes Poker make a comeback?

High Stakes Poker, the show that captivated the community, could be set to make return to our screens in the near future if recent rumours are to be believed.

The popular show became the biggest hits of the last few years when it aired on US TV; however, thanks to a combination of factors, not least the DOJ's infamous Black Friday move, the show was cancelled.

Part of High Stakes Poker's appeal was that it featured the best players in the world in a somewhat realistic setting. Far removed from the made-for-TV tournaments that often find their way onto TV, each session of High Stakes Poker basically took a bird's eye view of the action as it happened.

Of course, the players at the table were often selected, but they were all regulars in the biggest games in the world which meant there wasn't only a slew of juicy pots to watch, but some interesting table talk to listen to.

In fact, one of the most memorable pots on the show involved Cirque du Soleil's Guy Laliberte and French poker pro, David Benyamine, After a betting war on the flop, each player committed their stacks to create a pot worth just over $1 million

With his chances of success looking slim, Benyamine managed to find an ounce of mercy in his opponent before Doyle Brunson uttered one of the show's most famous lines:

"$1 million represents one day in his life. It represents your whole life."

After letting that message sink in, Benyamine accepted Laliberte's offer to chop the pot instead of play for an amount that could have left him broke.

A New Lease of Life?

Unfortunately, hands like this were soon confined to the annals of poker history as no one was either able or brave enough to resurrect the show. However, all that could be about to change as GSN recently asked its YouTube fans for feedback.

After setting up an online survey, GSN asked for input on various aspects of High Stakes Poker, including who would watch it, who should be on it and who would make a good host. Unfortunately, the survey is now closed and the video has been removed, but not before many members of the community had their say.

A Look back at High Stakes Poker

While many of us in the community are hoping the recent news is a sign that High Stakes Poker might be set to return, there's certainly not been formal acknowledgement of this from GSN. However, with online poker in the US now picking up steam, it could be the perfect opportunity for operators to present their brand to a global audience by partnering with a major US channel.

Regardless of these ifs and the whens, we can always look back at the show via the magic of YouTube and remember some of the incredible pots that had us shaking our heads in disbelief.
