The details are still filtering in about an armed robbery that took place at the EPT Berlin at around 2:30 local time on March 6th.
Speculation ranges from a completely foiled robbery attempt to a prize-pool draining heist of a million dollars.
Mayhem was the theme as some people milled about in confusion while others flipped over tables and took cover, prompted by others shouting out warnings and alerts while six men wearing masks struggled with security and attempted to pull off a bold heist during the main event of the European Poker Tour Berlin. With play down to about 22 action was already heating up on the poker room floor before the wave of panic hit.
Players, railbirds and media personnel alike rushed to find what defensible positions they could as on the ground reports of assault weapons, machetes and even hand grenades buzzed around the tournament area. While the main event was down to a score of players there were other events – including the traditional Ladies Event – on going as well.
No official word on the amount of the take or what the robbers actually were armed with have come through the chaos yet. Word has come down that the EPT officials will restart the tournaments in play from the point before the highly unusual interruption.
Below is a youtube video that appears to be footage captured during the robbery attempt, where it appears the criminals ran afoul of hotel or tournament security.
