Too much turkey, sherry and cheesy films? There was no Christmas hangover for Tom Dwan, as he racked up a $730k winning session to reduce his online deficit to $4.75 million in 2009.
The Christmas poker festivities started with Dwan besting the likes of geoff7878 and OneUponAStar at shorthanded, $50/$100 PLO for $43k. Spurred on by his win, durrrr began to mix it up with trex313, Ziigmund and shamed Cardrunners pro Brian Townsend on the six max, $300/$600 tables.
Townsend’s demise proved that Santa does nothing for bad little boys, as he recorded a $700k loss. Highlights included a $222k pot that went the way of Hac ‘trex313’ Dang. Townsend (A

) led out for $17k on a 8
6 2 flop, holding an overpair and open-ended straight draw. Trex313 (6 10 J Q) made a questionable call and was rewarded with the 6 on the turn. Townsend fired a $50k bullet, prompting a quick all in from trex. The Q bricked on the river, giving Dang a full house and the pot.
Dwan’s 109-hand clash with temperamental Finn Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies was the night’s main event. Durrrr ran out a $552k winner, largely thanks to two $200k+ pots. Sahamies (8 3 8 10) was coolered on the first, when the 8 Q 6 board gifted Dwan (Q Q 4 J) top set. With the 5, 7 bricking on the turn and river, the young American scooped the $226k pot.
The next major pot saw Dwan endure a large slice of luck. Ziigmund fired $40k on the river after the board panned out 6 A 4 10 Q. Holding the second nut flush (J 3 5 8), Dwan re-raised all in. Ziigmund called and promptly mucked his hand, gifting durrrr the $225k pot.
Despite a dismal online 2009 (mainly down to Isildur1 wreaking havoc), it seems that Dwan has began to turn things around. Poker enthusiasts will be looking forward to his appearance on the new season of High Stakes Poker, which starts screening in February.
