Carter on course for Barca EPT triumph

CrunchPoker Staff - 9 Sep 2009

The final table of one of Europe’s most prestigious events, the EPT Barcelona, gets underway today. American Carter Phillips is in prime position for the €850,000 first prize, as he roosts on 4,421,000 chips.

Top notch pros fell by the wayside on Day 4. WPT Player of the Year Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, always a danger in big tournaments because of his relentless aggression, hit the rail when his pocket fours succumbed to Q3. British Full Tilt red pro Roland de Wolfe followed him shortly after, when his A 6 lost out to Carter’s 8 8.

The biggest name remaining is that of UK veteran Marc Goodwin. Despite regular cashes on the UK and European circuit, including a GUKPT Manchester victory last year, a first major title eludes him, and he wants to go two better than his 3rd at the Monte Carlo Millions. He finds himself in second chip position, with 3,100,000.

Goodwin told Pokerlistings.com, ‘In my opinion, if I'm better than the other players, I'd rather play a lot of small pots than gamble a lot and let them get a shot at me. I'm happy with my big stack. I've taken my chances when I've had a good hand or I've made a move when I felt it was the right time and I'd rather play that way’.
