Annette Obrestad faltering at WSOP 2010

CrunchPoker Staff - 14 Jun 2010

Annette Obrestad’s first appearance in the WSOP has so far been less than spectacular.

While it is relatively early in the WSOP 2010 run, with weeks to go before the big top Main Event action begins, Annette Obrestad’s first appearance in the WSOP was expected by many to be awe-inspiring.

Obrestad caught the poker world’s attention as a teenager in Norway, playing under the name of Annette_15, the name under which a legend grew. Later she won the inauguaral WSOP Europe in 2007 – she was a day away from turning 19, and so years away from appearing in the WSOP in the US, where players must be 21.

Since turning 21 in September Obrestad let it be known she’d play the WSOP – and recently sparked some controversy with negative comments during an ESPN interview, comments deriding both women poker players and the Godfather of Poker, Doyle Brunson.

While many feel that the Ladies Event of the WSOP is a bad idea, Obrestad went on to say that women poker players, in general, “suck.”

She then made a target of herself when putting Brunson’s ability down to “ego” and stated she’d love to play him. Brunson, famously willing to engage all detractors via his blog and Twitter, dropped a controversial bomb himself when he suggested it was a “bad time of the month” for Obrestad (a Tweet he later felt compelled to apologize for, to women everywhere.)

With her bluster going into the WSOP, Obrestad’s best effort so far is a 72nd place finish at the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Event and $10,497.

Brunson’s controversial Tweet also contained an open ended challenge - “By the way, I’m at Bobby’s Room almost every day if she really wants to play.”
