With all the controversy surrounding the 2010 WSOP Ladies Event a woman still won the event this year.
Vanessa Hellebuyck emerged as the winner of the $1,000 Ladies Championship at the 2010 World Series of Poker, outlasting a field of 1,054 players – including 10 guys. Hellebuyck is a 35-year-old freelance web designer not unfamiliar to poker, but this $192,132 first place win is her carrier best.
Before they were all eliminated the ten guys in the event were causing a bit of an uproar, with some dressing in drag and one even using a tampon as a card protector, prompting many in the poker community to speak out against classless behavior. Still others, even prominent women poker pros like Annie Duke, saw nothing wrong with the guys competing. Duke is outright against the existence of a Ladies Event to begin with.
