SCOOP tip on chopping

CrunchPoker Staff - 2 Apr 2009

With 22 events, each running three different stake levels, the SCOOP season is going to cover a LOT of tournaments, and there are bound to be plenty of deals being made. Lucky for you, Poker Stars puts the rules right in the tourney window!

Chops are fairly common these days during major online poker tournaments. Just recently a big event saw a seven way chop at the final table!

In case you are unfamiliar with the term, to chop means to divide up a pot or, in this case, the remaining prize money near the end of a tournament. In the later case it isn’t an even divide (necessarily) and this is why it is also called “making a deal.”

Players are allowed to make whatever deals they want, normally (and are advised to understand the deal before agreeing to it.) In order to keep things fair and fun and exciting, Poker Stars puts a caveat on each SCOOP tournament.

As you can see in the image on the right, which shows two tournaments’ chop rules, any deals require a certain amount of money be left over for the eventual winner. In other words, chop all you want, but there needs to be something significant worth fighting over for the winner.

The image shows the rules for the first event, lowest stake, and the main event, highest stake. Some difference, hunh?
